A thirteen-year-old rescue cat is being heralded a hero after saving its owners from a potentially fatal explosion by alerting them to a gas leak.

Black and white cat Basil, who was adopted from the Reading and District branch of Cats Protection in Berkshire, ran into owner Sue Roff’s bedroom in the early hours of the morning in an agitated state and woke her up.

“The first time he did it I rolled over and went back to sleep,” explained Sue, aged 56, “but when he came back an hour later and started patting my face I knew something was up and I could immediately smell something unusual.”
