Cat with kidney problems
Does your cat have kidney problems?
Lately, there is something wrong with your cat. Her fur is dull, she doesn’t have much appetite and she drinks and pees much more than usually. Usually, we think that it concerns “disturbance of equilibrium”, “affectation” or “loneliness” since the cat starts crying at night in various tones. Your veterinarian has examined your cat thoroughly and has diagnosed that her kidneys function bad….
Live with kidney insufficiency:
Many cats suffer from a reduced kidney function. Chronic kidney insufficiency even is the second most occurring complaint with cats. Fortunately, your cat can, in case of a diagnosis in time and with the right treatment, live a pleasant life. It is therefore important that you have examined your cat regularly by the veterinarian.
The functioning and function of the kidneys:
Kidneys are of vital importance. Amongst others they take care of regulating the fluid balance, filtering the blood and keeping the chemical composition of the blood in balance. The kidneys consist of thousands of nephrones, and these nephrones execute these filtering tasks. If nephrones fall out, other nephrones take over their function at first. Because of this we don’t immediately notice that the kidney functions less well.
What is kidney insufficiency?
As your cat grows older, the number of functioning nephrones reduces. Because of this almost all older cats suffer from a reduced kidney function. This form of chronic kidney insufficiency is also called chronic interstitial nephritic. Also, other factors like wounds, infections, tumors and inherent defects might disturb the kidney functioning. Chronic insufficiency occurs more often with older cats (older than 7 years old); in fact it is the main cause of death. Cats with kidney failure however only show symptoms if more than 70% of the nephrones has been affected! It is therefore wise to have your cat checked regularly by the veterinarian. In this way kidney insufficiency can be diagnosed in time.
What are the symptoms of kidney insufficiency? The following symptoms may indicate kidney insufficiency:
• Excessive urinating
• Excessive drinking
• little appetite
• Dull fur
• Bad condition
• Weight loss
• Vomiting
• Ulcers in the beak
• Diarrhoea
• Listlessness
• Anaemia
The first symptom which often occurs caused by kidney insufficiency is: Urinating a lot. This is caused by the fact that the kidneys cannot hold the fluid well anymore. The many pees are compensated by your cat by means of drinking a lot. If your cat, for some reason, takes too little fluid, the symptoms will become worse. The urea content in the blood will increase (kidney poisoning) and your cat will get listless and sick because of this. The consequence is vomiting, due to which your cat will dehydrate more. If nothing is done, there is a huge chance that your cat will die soon. Anaemia is caused by a lack of a hormone which is produces in the kidneys. The hormone will make sure that the bone marrow will produce red blood cells. A shortage of this hormone as a result of failing kidneys results in a shortage of red blood cells; anaemia. Your cat will weaken and will have less endurance.
Can chronic kidney insufficiency be treated ?
Your cat will remain a kidney patient for the rest of her life. Chronic kidney insufficiency cannot be cured. However, it can be treated well! With the right medicines and an adapted diet your cat can live a normal life.
What will be the effect of the treatment?
The treatment slows down the development of chronic kidney insufficiency and relieves the symptoms which are a result of this disease. The life expectancy and the life quality of your cat will be improved. You will notice changes fast:
• More appetite
• Increase in weight
• Shiny fur
• Less urinating
• Less thirst
• Better condition (more active)
