Cornish Rex
History Cornish RexIn the fifties a curly kitten was born in England in a nest of farm cats. It took place in the county of Cornwall, which is why the name Cornish Rex was invented.
The name Rex came from a rabbit breed with the same curly fur. By means of this first cat and his mother the breed was developed.
The property for the curly fur is recessive, which means that you must always cross a Cornish Rex with a Cornish Rex in order to get
curly kittens. The Cornish Rex and Devon Rex are two separate breeds and can therefore not be crossed You would then get smooth hairy kittens since the curly fur is based on another mutation. It both concerns breeds which, thanks to the special fur, cause less problems in case of allergies than other breeds.

The Cornish Rex is a cat with an unique curly, soft fur. This fur hardly moults, so you will not find hairs in house or on clothes. They have a rather “spacy” appearance which you love or which you dislike. They have great, upright ears and an elegant, muscled body. They feel warm since their hairs are so short. That is why they prefer to lie on warm spots in the house, like on your lap or on the heating. This special breed is available in two types: The American and the European type. The American type is a bit smaller and has a finer figure and usually a thinner fur, although he European type has a thicker fur and is a bit larger. The profile of both types also differs.
In Europe the
Rex cats have a straight profile and in the USA they prefer a more extreme type with a Latin profile. In Holland many breeders are classified between these two types. The
Cornish Rex may be bred in all possible colors, also with white and with a Siamese marking (si-rex). Enough choice!
Character Cornish RexTheir character is great! They are very affectionate, intelligent and lively. They can also be extremely naughty and are the happiest with one or more cats around them so that they can play around.
This breed has a large sense of humor and often looks like a crossing between a cat, a dog and a monkey. They often “help” us out with all kinds of jobs in the house, they especially love to do the dishes.
Care
The Cornish Rex doesn’t need much care compared to other breeds. They hardly moult and brushing now and then is often enough. The best thing for their fur is to stoke them often which will each Cornish Rex will love!
GeneralWe love this special breed. Their muscled bodies make them look like monkeys and they have a loving character. We hope we have made you enthusiastic concerning the Cornish Rex.
