Abyssinian
The origin
The Abyssinian cats are originally from the desert of Ethiopia, which was called Abyssinia at that time. The Egyptians, in the time of pharaohs and pyramid builders worshipped the sun above all (the god Aton). He was the most important of all gods, the father of the pharaoh, the creator of the animals, the protector of the harvest. The sun goddess was portrayed as a cat, which resembles the present Abyssinian.

People who know Egypt know that the scarabee (dung beetle) was the symbol of fertility. It is therefore not surprising that the Abyssinian, who had the scarabee sign on the head, was worshipped in the old Egypt. The character of the Abyssinian, loving and sunbathing also caused this. Scientific research hasn’t been able to determine the origin of the Abyssinian indisputably. The resemblance with regard to appearance and figure between the present Abyssinian and the mummified cats which were found during the excavations in Gizeh, is striking. Many portrayals and images also show resemblances with the Abyssinian cat which we know nowadays. In any case, it is sure that the very first Abyssinian cat was taken from Ethiopia to Great Britain in 1868 by field marshal Robert Napier. This cat, named Zula, showed the typical ticking in the fur, but further the cat didn’t resemble an Abyssinian at all. According to the English people Zula is the son and heir of all present Abyssinians and has become the present Abyssinian with the help of careful crossings with accurately selected native English cats.
CharacteristicsExcept for his impressive elegant and venous figure, the Abyssinian cat has another beautiful exterior characteristic: his fur. It is characterized by a double or even triple band marking in each separate hair, in which black, reddish and sandy-color vary. This was the original color (wild color). Nowadays Abyssinians have several colors. Some of them don’t have the wild color: sorrel, blue, silver, chocolate and fawn are only a few examples. The Abyssinian cat is a short-haired cat. The Abyssinian has a muscular, robust and supple body. The paws are rangy. The elegant feet are small and oval.

The head is wide and moderate wedge-shaped, the bridge (of the nose) has a slight curve. The almond-shaped eyes are located slantingly in the head. The relatively large ears are located low, wide at the base and pointed at the top.
The character:The sun can be connected to the Abyssinian cat. The sun in which they nourish themselves. The sun which seems to catch their fur. The sun is also in their character. According to us there isn’t a happier, warmer or sunnier cat breed available. The intelligence of the Abyssinian cat is larger the intelligence of other cats. Abyssinians are personalities, not haughty, very elegant, cheerful, but not loudly. They love to cuddle and they are loyal friends: sworn friends.
Surroundings:The Abyssinian cat isn’t an ordinary house cat. He is lively, very fast, a household pet and very adventurous. Being locked in a small room is something he can’t stand and he will definitely pine away. Being alone is also something he doesn’t like. The Abyssinian cat will become a part of your family and he wants to share his life with the family. He involves the whole family in his game and loves to play the fool without being nasty or loudly. The Abyssinian is very attached to his owner, more than to his surroundings. The Abyssinian cat loves to sit on a high place en loves to climb in a sisal climbing pool; no matter how high it is, he will go up
