Cat food

There have been a lot of discussions concerning cat food and especially concerning the question whether you should give canned or dry food.
Advantages of canned food:
Canned food contains a lot of liquid and your cat will therefore swallow enough liquid. (this might be a perfect godsend especially for old but also for sick cats!).
Disadvantages of canned food:
Stronger smelling faeces,
more faeces,
Flies place eggs on food rests
Advantages of dry food:
Hygienic: no flies (eggs) on food rests, Easy to dose
Disadvantages of dry food:
Fresh water must always be present (by the way, this should also be present in case of canned food). In the past there have been complaints with regard to the kidneys, the manufacturers however solved this of course with the consequence that nowadays there is a copious offer of cat food!
A kitten of course needs more proteins than a cat which is 11 years old. The best way is to give your kitten “kitten food” (until 5-6 months), you then switch to “adult food”. Cats and certainly kittens love milk. Take the special cat milk (normal milk is too fat!), available in most supermarkets and definitely in a pet shop! You give your cat “Adult food” until he is 10-11 years old and then you switch to “senior food”. This contains fewer calories which is better for your cat’s figure. Of course a combination of dry food and canned food is possible as well.
  Wrong food!
Pork
Pork (especially raw pork is very dangerous) might contain the virus of Aujeszki. This virus is very dangerous for a cat. If the cat gets infected with it, it is always mortal. This lasts maximum 3 days….the symptoms resemble the rabies’ virus. They are: foam at the mouth, a lot of miaowing, character change, nerve symptoms etc. There are no medicines for it, so: Avoid this disease by not giving your cat pork!!!! It is therefore always better to heat the meat; the best way is to boil the meat. Too much meat is often given. Because of this cats might develop kidney problems when they are older. You give young cats 20 grams per kg body weight. Adult cats only need 10 grams per kg body weight. A cat which already has kidney problems, only needs 5 grams per kg body weight. If you give meat, make sure it has a good quality. For example muscle meat. You shouldn’t give offal like: blood pudding, liver, little kidneys.
Liver
Many cats are very choosy. You tend to give your cat what he likes. You often give raw liver since many cats like this! Canned food and cat chunks are often avoided since the cat doesn’t want to eat this. It is not wise to only give your cat meat since it doesn’t contain everything the cat needs. Raw liver contains a lot of vitamins, for example vitamin A. This vitamin isn’t transported through the urine, but is stored in the body’s fat. If you have an overdose of vitamin A, the cat might have joint problems or bone problems. This might result in stiffness and if nothing is done, in inflammation! If you insist on giving liver, boil it in advance. In this way you destroy the vitamin A.
Giving bones
Poultry, pork or mutton bones are dangerous for your cat. Especially after heating the meat will easily splinter which might cause an intestine stoppage, since the cat will swallow the splinters. Often a surgery is needed in order to remove such a bone. A splintered bone can even prick through the intestine wall. Because of this the intestine content in the abdomen might start leaking which can cause peritonitis. This also ends up in a surgery and an antibiotic treatment is necessary. So: Never feed your cat bones!
Bladder waste
Many people think that castrated tomcats may not have dry food because they might get the FUS (Feline Urinary Syndrome). The cause is that cats, by nature, don’t drink much and because of this their bladder isn’t wet enough and the urine doesn’t get sour enough. Crystals might arise which accumulate in bladder waste. The cat gets a bladder irritation, bladder infection etc. With female cats this occurs less because the urinary passages of female cats are wider. If a (tom) cat has bladder waste, you must immediately see a veterinarian in order to avoid poisoning and in order to avoid a painful death. When it comes to giving dry food, try to combine this as much as possible with canned food. And make sure that water is always available. Dry food is good for the teeth and most cats like canned food better and it contains liquid
Rests
Everyone knows in the meantime that a cat has different food demands than a human being. If you give your cat your own food rests, you ask for trouble! Butter, fat, oil and sauces aren’t good for us, let alone for your cat!
